Winter Vacay

We came to Durango bound and determined to take part in some snow sports. We scheduled our two week trip so we’d be here when our friends Jim & Cindi were here from Texas to also enjoy some snow. We met this fabulous couple at church last summer.

One of my bucket list items was to snowmobile in the Colorado Rockies. During my college days at Purdue, my Uncle Joe brought his sleds from Ohio to Indiana one winter. I had a blast zooming around the farmland. This time we headed to Purgatory Ski Resort with our friend Jim. The snow started when we did, so we didn’t see any of the magnificent mountain views but it was fun to zip through the thick, falling snow in the backcountry. I’m up for this again! I am modeling Craig’s childhood ski mask, which made me look like either a freaky clown or a serial killer, but it kept my face from freezing.

However, the day Cindi chose for us to snowshoe was a whole different world. The sky was bright blue, the temperature in the low 40’s, and we were encircled by pure mountain majesty. Unfortunately, I was overdressed and huffed and puffed the whole time like a fricken flatlander even though we live at 5,000 feet elevation in Fort Collins. Albeit, we snowshoed at Andrews Lake which is nearly 11,000 feet so oxygen was sparse. Of course, Craig did a great job and kept up with the lead group.

Craig wants to ski but I’m not going to risk life or limb at my elderly age to do a sport which has always terrified me. The last time I stood on top of a Rocky Mountain and peered down the slope, I almost bawled and wanted to call a helicopter to rescue me. I survived, but it’s just not my sport and I’m okay with that! On second thought, since Craig doesn’t have a ski buddy he opted out, so we’ll stick to pickleball.

Admiral Roswell is doing an admirable job adapting to hotels and loves napping on his heated blanket. For anyone with high anxiety pets, Calming Care, a probiotic powder by Purina, had done wonders to ease Roswell’s terrors. He’s a much happier cat!

Headed back home this weekend. For our next adventure, we plan to visit somewhere WARM surrounded by beautiful blue water!

P.S. Rest in peace to our #1 blog fan, R.J. Hanna, who passed on to heaven last Sunday. R J., we will miss you and your encouraging comments!

While you two are having too much fun in the snowy peaks, FtCollins is 64°F today. OK, so it’s the next week— and 6K feet lower — that makes a ‘UGE difference in Colorado, especially on the Front Range! (High Prairie)
